In 2009, JB and Jr. individually auditioned for JYP Entertainment. With their exceptional dance skills and good looks, they tied the 5th Open auditions as the overall winners and later became trainees under JYP Entertainment. During their trainees days, JB and Jr. appeared in San E‘s “Tasty San” music video.
In 2012, both of them got a role on the KBS drama Dream High 2, the sequel to the 2011 hit drama Dream High. On February 3, it was announced that JB and Jr. would debut officially as a boy band sometime during the second half of 2012.

JJ Project’s first endoresment was for LG’s teen cosmetic line, nana’s B. On July 2, 2012 the duo signed an exclusive endorsement contract for clothing brand, TBJ. On November of the same year, the duo together with Wonder Girls‘ Sohee have been selected as models for Reebok‘s GL 6000 series.
